Prabhu (1987) defined task as “an activity which required learners to arrive at an outcome from given information through some process of thought, and which allowed teachers to control and regulate that process” (p.24).
An evidence of beginner learners’ development as a consequence of task-based instruction is that

a) early tasks drew a good deal of learners’ numeracy skills, such as times of day, dates on calendars, age and year of birth, prices and numbers of objects bought, whose cognitive challenge consisted of counting and calculating.
b) in early lessons, tasks in the classroom promoted interaction were a powerful support to their effort to infer meaning, which reduced their insecurity from acting based on random conjecture.
c) the teacher adopted such strategies as repeating or rephrasing the statement, breaking it down into smaller propositions, employing non-verbal forms of communication to get the meaning across.
d) when communicating, they deployed non-linguistic resources, which allowed, not only the achievement of some degree of communication, but some new resources, however small, in the target language.
