Sometimes a sentence is not understood by the reader although the vocabulary is known.

This may happen because the sentence is difficult to unravel syntactically. There are a

number of reasons why a sentence may be difficult to understand such as the use of

complex noun groups, nominalizations, participial phrases, and subordination.

Considering these examples, all the following alternatives are correct, EXCEPT:

A complex noun group consists of a head noun modified by adjectives or other words that may precede or follow it, and it's often the modifiers that follow which give most trouble.

Nominalizations are a major issue in academic texts and they can be associated with complex noun groups making the sentence even more difficult to understand.

Subordinate noun clauses are often troublesome because they can make it difficult for the reader to identify the subject or the object of the sentence.

In the case of participial phrases, the problem is the fact that they are always used as adjective phrases to modify a noun or a pronoun.
